The aisle that you walk down on your wedding day is sort of like a bridge that connects the engaged you to the married you. It is the last walk that you will take before you become a wife, so why not make it fantastic?
Winter weddings are always beautiful, but how can you spice up your aisle without making it look like you’re on your way to the North Pole? Here are some ideas that will make your walk up the aisle one to remember. To get away from the holiday feel, try using colors like silver or blue. These will reflect the season, but your guests won’t expect you to ride in on a reindeer. For aisle cones, use white feathers and beads or even frosted foliage. Winter is all about sparkle and ice so try to embrace some bling by using sparkly or clear snowflake ornaments in your aisle cones. For an aisle runner consider a textured pattern; depending on the style and detail you can make it look like you’re walking on a path of freshly fallen snowflakes. The more texture, the more realistic it will look.
If you’re getting married in a warmer season, there are many ways that you can make your aisle shine. If it’s outdoors then you have an excellent opportunity to use some of nature’s best assets. An aisle enclosed with trees is always beautiful and it gives you the option to add some of your own decor without taking away from the simplistic elegance of mother nature herself. Adding a few ribbons or lights that complement your colors and theme will give your aisle that personal touch. Outdoor aisle markers can be made by using clear vases filled with anything you like—flowers, sticks, stones, and candles. If you’re looking for a simpler and more natural feel, throw down some fresh flower petals as a runner and leave the aisle markers out. If you’ve got a picturesque location, you won’t need to add a lot of decoration to make it memorable. Use flowers that match your theme; fall weddings are a great time to use reds, oranges and yellows and you can even use some dried wheat to accent them. Spring and summer weddings will give you the chance to use brighter colors and to experiment more. Summer aisle cones can be made by using almost anything you’d like, from mini-bouquets to color co-ordinated bows.
When choosing the decor for your aisle, remember to match your theme and to think outside the box. It may be a short walk, but it’s an important one and you deserve to enjoy every step of it. There are many DIY options out there, so if you have a strict budget don’t shy away from something you like because of the price tag; embrace your creative side and enlist some friends to give you a hand!

Eating your fruits and veggies is important, particularly for the bride-to-be who is trying to shed those extra pounds and tone up before the wedding. But before you grab that additional stock of celery (or any other type of produce) make sure to look at EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce before you buy. Their shopper’s guide will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and which are the most important to buy organic. You can significantly lower your pesticide intake by avoiding the following 12 “most contaminated” fruits and vegetables and eating more of the listed “least contaminated” produce.

It’s important for everyone to make the effort to become more aware of what we really consume. Pesticides and other harmful chemicals can be very detrimental to one’s long term health. Many of us don’t know realize that many dangerous chemicals can actually be found in and on some of the most common food items that we find in our very own kitchens. So protect your friends, family, partner and yourself by making sure that your wedding menu is pesticide and chemical free. And even after the wedding, a great way to start and maintain a healthy marriage and lifestyle is to eat healthy and purchase healthy.
Next time that you are near your community Farmer’s Market, make sure to stop by and stock up on some of their organic produce. If you’re unsure where you can find a farmer’s market, check out the Alberta Farmers’ Market Association and/or the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets to find the one closest to you.

Gay Derk, President of the Bridal Fantasy Group, spent this past weekend enjoying ‘Canada’s Organic Capital’ with family and friends and ran into a national treasure . . .

This past weekend, on a visit home with my husband, I passed through Cawston in the Simikameen Valley to visit Forbes Farm where my nephew Jeremy was picking cherries. As I am a huge advocate of organic food, I always stop at local organic farms to pick the best in organic fruits and vegetables. I was fortunate enough to run into Dr. David Suzuki and his wife Dr. Tara Cullis who had been picking cherries with the owner of the farm, Gord Forbes.

It was truly refreshing to witness such a strong relationship between David and Tara after forty years of marriage and working together in The David Suzuki Foundation, helping us all to become more aware of the prevalent dangers and choices that are before us such as pollution, sustainable living, clean energy, and other environmental issues. Gord Forbes passed on a few shots of David and Tara putting their cherry picking skills to action . . .

I really believe that a good way newlyweds should start their life together is by making choices to shop local and to shop organic whenever possible. This topic was actually brought up a few times when I was talking with Tara. I highly recommend that you take a look at Live Local, Dine Local as their website is filled with information about the benefits of eating local. On their website’s Find a Business section, you can also find a directory of local stores and restaurants that only use local ingredients and resources for their business. Here’s a good piece of information I found from their Eat Local section of the website:
“Locally-grown food is fresher than food that has been imported from distant corners of the world, and its flavour, nutrition and quality reflects that freshness. It also doesn’t come with the carbon footprint that food shipped by plane, train and automobile does . . . Eating local is also a great way to support our local food system, and make sure our dollars support local farmers, producers and manufacturers who contribute to Alberta’s rural and urban economies.”
So start the Live Local, Dine Local movement in your circle of friends and family if you haven’t already! The reason why I think many of us don’t eat organic is because we just don’t understand what “organic” growing is and its benefits. Well . . . organic food is food that is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. Some of its major benefits include: higher nutritional content, less toxins, better quality, and better taste. Quoting You-Nique Physique . . . “when growing organic produce, food is rotated in such a way as to keep soil rich in nutrients and optimal for supporting many years of growth and supplying optimal amounts of vitamins and minerals.”
However, if convenience is your only deterrence, organic food is now just as convenient to buy as your other alternatives. You’ll find that most grocery stores now have sections solely dedicated for organic products and produce. But I truly enjoy visiting farmers markets because they are such great sources to get fresh and organic produce. If you’re unsure about where there’s a farmers market in your city, as most of us say nowadays . . . “just Google it” as well as visit the Alberta Farmers’ Market Association or the BC’s Association of Farmers’ Markets to find a location near you.
