Chelsea Clinton - An All American, Fairytale Wedding

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

On July 31, 2010, America had its own version of a royal wedding. Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky tied the knot. Chelsea looked simply breath-taking as her father, Bill, walked her down the aisle. The wedding took place at the Astor Court Estate in Rhinebeck, NY. Clinton wore a custom silk organza Vera Wang wedding gown.

When asked how she felt about Chelsea choosing her as her gown designer, Wang commented: “It was an honour and a privilege to dress Chelsea on her wedding day. I have watched her grow into a beautiful, grounded and caring young woman. She radiated joy, youth and happiness. I wish Chelsea and Marc a long, happy and healthy life together.”

While many of us are familiar with Chelsea Clinton, not everyone knows who Marc Mezvinsky is. Mezvinsky comes from a political background as well. He is the son of former Iowa congressman Edward Mezvinsky and former NBC reporter and congresswoman Marjorie Margolies Mezvinsky. Marc is an investment banker with Goldman Sachs.

The couple met as teens, and attended Stanford together.

Despite the security required for the 500 guests, dignitaries and celebrities present at the wedding, the ceremony was incredibly romantic and intimate.

Details have been kept under wraps, but some information is out. During the interfaith ceremony the couple quoted from The Life That I Have by Leo Marks. Marc wore a traditional Jewish prayer shawl and cap with a Burberry suit. A Jewish Marriage certificate was beautifully displayed (called a Katuba). Both Chelsea and Mark exchanged their tender vows of everlasting love and commitment to each other.

Chelsea’s and Mark’s $3 million wedding was nothing short of a fairy-tale wedding.

Malene Grotrian Does Marvels to Vintage Wedding Dresses

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

“Something Old, Something New,
Something Borrowed, Something Blue,
and a Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe.”

The quote above is familiar, and full of history. Britain’s silver sixpence was in circulation from 1551 to 1967. The tradition of incorporating these elements into the bride’s wedding dress and accessories likely became popular during the Victorian era (Approx. 1837-1900).

Inspired by this wedding ritual, Malene Grotrian Design helps brides to restore their mother’s or grandmothers wedding dress and turn it into a modern couture wedding for the new bride-to-be. Each vintage dress is altered to each bride’s exact desires to create the wedding dress they’ve always dreamed of. Malene has brought a fresh and new approach to a beautiful tradition.

Not only are Malene Grotrian’s brides walking towards their groom wearing the gown of their dreams; they also have something that is both old and new - a wedding dress that is truly special. The beauty of Malene’s art is that the special memories of the past and present will carry on for another lifetime through each wedding.

Images and Text by Emma Bowers (Jamaica Tourist Board)

Dare to dream about a beautiful destination wedding on a lively Caribbean island! Come to Jamaica; it’s just what you’re looking for. The diverse natural attractions, from jungle mountaintops to beaches bathed in the island sun, make Jamaica a destination that appeals to visitors from around the globe and makes this the ideal tropical paradise to say “I Do.” Jamaica’s tropical climate remains blissfully the same from season to season, so planning a wedding or honeymoon anytime from May to December can save couples up to 40% on hotels and other costs.

With so many beautiful locations all over the island, you’ll have a difficult time deciding on the perfect spot to celebrate the biggest day of your lives! You can choose an intimate wedding in a botanical garden, where you will exchange vows under a gazebo with the sound of rushing water in the background. Hold your ceremony at an island estate house, with a sweeping lawn that is ideal for your reception under the stars. One such destination is Rose Hall Great House, the most famous great house in Jamaica. Built in the Georgian style architecture, the three-story home was built in 1770’s by a rich plantation owner named John Palmer. Rose Hall sits upon the hill overlooking the Rose Hall area and blue sea surrounded by lush green flora and fauna.

Or consider Lover’s Leap on the South Coast of Jamaica. The dramatic name says it all about this unique place to exchange vows. Lover’s Leap is a sheer 1,700-foot cliff overhanging the sea and Cutlass Beach. Legend has it that two young slaves leaped to their deaths rather than be separated by their jealous plantation owner. However, modern couples can use this spot to exchange vows and enjoy the spectacular views. Active brides and grooms may hike down from Lover’s Leap onto a secluded beach. In addition to beautiful landscape, Lover’s Leap almost guarantees good weather.

If you’re imagining waves crashing, sand under your feet, and the sun shining brightly overhead, you can exchange your vows of love on one of the island’s beautiful beaches. If you are celebrating your day in Jamaica, why not do it the Jamaican way? From a reggae style steel drum band to traditional island wedding cuisine, start your new life as husband and wife, Jamaican style!

No matter what your wedding dreams may be, we can arrange a perfect event you’ll always remember. Resorts, small inns and villas across the island offer endless options to help you design your perfect wedding day, many offering a wedding planner to coordinate every last detail. Visitors can be married just 24 hours after arriving in Jamaica providing a prior application has been made for a marriage license.

Destination Weddings: Get Your Groom A Perfect Linen Suit

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

At Derks, we carry a large variety of unique linen island wedding apparel for destination and beach weddings, events, and tropical vacations. We specialize in men’s linen beach attire such as linen suits, pants, and shirts.

The most important thing with linen is that the fabric is natural and it has a natural look. When purchasing linen clothing, one must know that there will be wrinkles, but that’s one of the delicate and unique features of linen. If you notice any heavy wrinkles, don’t worry, most hotels have in-house dry cleaning so get them to dry-clean it and the wrinkles will relax from the travel. Make sure that linen clothing is always hung up as it is super easy for it to wrinkle. Other than that, just relax, enjoy the hot weather, and have fun.

To look absolutely perfect, linen should be pressed. But if you’re doing your own washing, you can avoid some of the work. Never over-dry the fabric and avoid using the high dryer temperature while drying. Remove your clothes as soon as the dryer is done. If you can, put out the corners and press them by hand. All of these steps can greatly reduce the amount of ironing you have to do later.

The Endless Options Of Your Groom’s Suit

Monday, July 12th, 2010

If your groom decides to purchase rather than rent, then the sky is the limit when it comes to buying a tuxedo or suit. From wild cuts and fabrics to the classic black one button, anything is possible.

There are many variables to consider when choosing a suit: time of day, location of event, themes, etc. Discuss what you both want (and what you don’t want). Your personal tastes will come into play when choosing the attire for the big day.

Suits in particular have gained a lot of attention recently. From Fashion Television to GQ, everyone is excited about the various ways to dress up and dress down a great fitting suit for any occasion. There seems to be no better time to buy than now, but remember to choose wisely when purchasing a formal outfit or suit.

Since formalwear is not a typical daily outfit, most people want to purchase something that will last them at least eight to ten years. Most formalwear specialists will recommend opting for a more classic design to get the most out of your purchase.

From neckties, bowties, cummerbunds, and cufflinks, there seems to be a never-ending selection of accessories that men can choose from. Experiment with your accessories, shop for the occasion, and don’t be afraid to break free from your usual conservative style.

Another option is to pair a classic, basic colored suit with a dressy shirt and accessories. Opting for a suit rather than a tuxedo is a practical choice as you can get a lot more wear out of both the pants and blazer of your suit. Once the big day is over, you won’t need to hang your suit in the back of your closet. Simply pair up dark denim with your suit blazer and you will be set for a casual dinner or outing. So be creative in putting together different outfits with your suit pieces. Opt for suits like Ted Baker’s Passion Kier and Worlds suits (first two suits above) which are great for versatility and easily able to be dressed up or down.

Help Your Man Feel Comfortable with the Idea of Marriage

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

We’ve heard the same story time and time again, you’ve been with your significant other for years and now you’re scared that he will never ask that four-word question you’ve been dying to hear for so long. If you’ve been dating for a while and you two are clearly right for each other, you need to figure out what is holding him back and help him to see that you are The One.

Fear of commitment can definitely hold a guy back from settling down. It isn’t that he doesn’t love you, but that he is afraid that as soon as he settles down, he will meet the “perfect” women and regret his decision to get married. The best thing to do is give him time and avoid pressuring him. You don’t want to push him even further from the idea of marriage by making him feel you are trying to force him to marry you. Try to be understanding of his fear, but also let him know that it’s not realistic and fair of him to make you wait forever. One healthy way to do this is to just be yourself – be the woman he fell in love with. This should help him see that you are his “perfect” woman.

Many people hate or fear change as its affects can be so unpredictable. This applies to marriage too -some men really fear the changes that will come with life after marriage. He might feel like he’ll lose time with his friends and family after he ties the knot. If the two of you spend everyday together, try giving him more space and freedom to spend time with his family and friends. Help him too see that marriage will not rob him of the time he needs to explore his interests and spend time with his friends.

Aside from a fear of commitment, there is an opposite force at play too in some cases. A sense of chivalry. Even in today’s modern society, men still instinctively feel the need to provide and care for their wives and families. He might still be looking for his dream job, and may not think it would be fair to marry you just yet. However, if you know that with all his passion, intelligence, and skills there is nothing that will prevent him in securing his dream job, show him that you are in for the long haul, and that you want to work with him to overcome any of the obstacles that might get in the way. Let him to see that working with you to mold the future you both dream of will make the life you’ve created with each other so much more meaningful.

Thank You Cards: One of a Kind Keepsakes

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Thank you cards give you a wonderful opportunity to share your favourite wedding or couple photos. Say thank you with a personalized image of the two of you at your wedding, or in a more casual setting. A card with your picture can be a beautiful keepsake for family, and an inexpensive wedding favour for friends and acquaintances.

Go big with a corner to corner couple’s collage, or keep it subtle with a small picture of the two of you. Either way – your smiling faces will add a personal touch to a classic wedding tradition.

Another way to personalize your thank you cards is to consider using different materials. Handwriting on one-of-a-kind postcards or crafting your own card from recycled paper are lovely, although time consuming, methods to show appreciation to your guests.
