Hair today, gone tomorrow… but then back again!

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

As much as I love fashion, trends seem to be going through a revolving door. Pieces and styles that were popular 15 years ago seem to be consistently making a comeback. For instance, in today’s society you might look around the room and see flare-legged jeans coming back, shoulder pads in boyfriend blazers, fedoras, tapered pants, oxford shoes, wide black rimmed glasses. Everything revolves, albeit with slight and subtle differences to make things neater, but things are essentially the same.

In today’s celebrity culture, things are taking a step back into the trends that were seen before. And this is seen a lot with hair. What has been really popular on the red carpet lately is soft curls and buns- a kick back to the classic styles seen in the “summers of love”. They’re timeless.

My personal favorite is anything to do with soft curls. Girls with short hair, long hair, medium hair, it doesn’t matter. There’s something about having your hair down with soft curls running down your back that screams natural beauty to me. You’re not over done, and trying to look like something you’re not. In the last few weddings I’ve gone too, the girls have decided to keep their hair down – either for simplicity sake, or because that’s what their groom prefers. The pro to having your hair down in my opinion is that you’ll never regret it. This hair trend was extremely popular for celebrity brides, with brides such as Kate Moss and Vanessa Manillo going for this look. The most famous for the elegant hair down and slightly curled look? The modern day princess, Kate Middleton. If you really want to jazz it up though, add the same fresh flowers you’ll be using for your bouquets into your hair, or maybe find some individual pearl clips and place them in. Headbands, or a tiara if you feel like it, can give it a regal feel. Veils also look gorgeous.

The high bun has definitely made a comeback in recent years as well. Now, I wouldn’t recommend doing it as large as Audrey Hepburn has, but a little bun never hurt anybody. It looks beautiful if you feel like attaching a veil to the back, just underneath, or if you’d rather have your face completely free of hair getting in the way. The things I love about buns is that they’re a classic style, and they’ve been around forever. Some celebrities who have done this style include Hilary Duff in her wedding to former Oiler Mike Comrie. If you feel like the high style is too much for you, consider doing an up-do to the back, with a straightened front and messy, curly back pinned up. Or, consider pinning all your hair back with subtle braiding detail, with your average bun, as seen on , and it can also be seen in the infamous 2 hour televised event that was Kim Kardashian’s wedding, or on Kristen Stewart at the Los Angeles premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Whatever style you choose, remember one thing. It’s your BIG day. Don’t do something completely trendy, because there’s a chance you’ll regret it in 10 years when looking back at your wedding pictures. Pick a style that you feel is timeless and go with it. Don’t be afraid to test things out before your big do needs to be done. Try out accessories in your hair, go big or go simple. The biggest thing though is to test it on yourself.

Remember, it might be hair today, but it could be gone tomorrow. Enjoy testing! (And send us pictures.)

For those brides still in the middle of the wedding planning process, we have found an excellent planning resource at a modern proposal event planning. This site is filled with vibrant photos showcasing clever ideas other brides have utilized to make their event stand apart from the rest. The short commentaries left by the blog owners serve to highlight especially distinct features that otherwise may go unnoticed, or details that were unable to be captured by the lens of the camera.

Under the Categories menu, there are some enjoyable articles under the Tips and Money Saving Tips selections that offer advice on things from wedding vendor gratuities to the simple dos and don’ts of getting ready on the day of the ceremony. The Trends section helps those of us not in the know current and up to date, but perhaps the most beneficial service this website provides is location specific.

Brides located in Edmonton and the surrounding area can access lists of local vendors, venues and photography locations, which aid the planning process considerably. Though perhaps the greatest advantage Edmonton brides will have the ability to book the staff of a modern proposal event planning personally, when in doubt, it’s always nice to have a helping hand at your disposal.

Celebrity Wedding Watch: Hilary Duff Weds Edmonton’s Mike Comrie

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Hilary Duff and Edmonton’s Mike Comrie were married in a romantic sunset ceremony this weekend.

It was a small, family affair. Only 100 of the couple’s closest family and friends were invited. Hilary’s sister Haylie served as maid of honour, and Hilary walked down the aisle with her mother, Susan, at her side.
The wedding took place at a $29 million estate in Montecito, Calif. on Saturday afternoon.
Hilary wore a strapless Vera Wang gown, and her dark hair in a loose bun. Rose petals and candles lined the aisle.

Photos of the event are scarce, as the media were not included. Just Jared has some blurry but exciting footage of the venue, dress, and the couple at the altar that you can view here.
Hilary and Mike spent their wedding night at the Kennedy cottage at the San Ysidro Ranch. This cottage is famous as it is the spot where John and Jackie Kennedy spent their honeymoon in 1953.

The couple were engaged this February in Hawaii after dating for three years.
Comrie was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and attended Jasper Place High School. Comrie was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 1999. Since then he has played for several NHL teams, and is currently a free agent. Comrie hopes to rejoin the Oiler’s roster in the upcoming year.
This October, Comrie told Hockey Night in Canada that the pair first bumped into each other at an Idaho resort. “We were all on the same plane and it was kind of, I guess, maybe a bit of a fluke,” Comrie said. “It [was] one of those things where we were all in a group … we spent the weekend all hanging out.”

When asked about Mike, Hilary has nothing but good things to say: “[Comrie's] a great guy. I’ve never met anyone who could say a bad word about him. He’s generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads off, which I need in my life…He’s unique. I wouldn’t want to be with someone who wasn’t unique (Us Magazine).

Duff has been having a great year, having recently scored a Choice TV Female Scene Stealer Teen Choice Award for her role as Olivia Burke on Gossip Girl.
